1. Let It Snow

This movie is an adaptation of the novel with the same title. The story takes place in a small town called Waffle Town and features a group of acquaintances. One of the main cast, Isabela Merced, plays the role of Julie Reyes, a high school senior who was accepted into Columbia University.

She is faced with the thought choice of leaving her ailing mother behind. However, when a snowstorm hits the town, new relationships are revealed. Odeya Rush is another main cast in this festive-themed movie. This is a great movie for the holiday season, and just about any season. The movie was released in 2019 and is also suitable for the family.

2. Dear Ex

A comedy-drama based in Taiwan about a teenage boy Song who makes a big discovery about his father. The movie features cast members such as Joseph Huang and Hsieh Ying Shiuan. Song finds himself in between his mother and his father’s lover, Jay, who is listed as the life insurance beneficiary on his father’s will.

This story is about loyalty and the closeted life of homosexuals. It also features betrayal as Liu, Song’s mother, gets to know her husband has been unfaithful. The movie shows how many people all over the world still struggle with coming out as gay.

3. Duck Butter

This 2018 movie isn’t the typical rom-com LGBTQ movie. It features cast Laia Costa and Ali Shawkat who gave amazing performances in this movie. The story is about two of the main characters who are tired of failing love connections.

After an aspiring actress, Naima goes to a gay club, she decides to go on a 24-hour adventure of intimacy. The experiment is said to fast-track the hoops of a romantic relationship for a better connection. Although the movie lacks true originality it is compensated in other areas. This shortcoming is made up by the passionate acting and tender tone of the script.

4. The Half of It

A tale of the shy Ellie and how she begins to fall for the crush of her contractor. The movie was released in 2020 and is said to be dubbed as a loose retelling of Cyrano de Bergerac with a modern twist. Ellie is a teenager who is often hired to do the homework of other students at a fee.

She is soon commissioned to write a love letter to the crush of a joke, Aster. She however begins to fall for Aster and a love triangle begins to form between the three of them. Main cast members Leah Lewis and Daniel Diemer are featured in the film. The movie has some originality, as it teaches the importance of being true to oneself.

5. Circus of Books

This 2019 documentary tells the true story of a time when the LGBTQ community wasn’t widely accepted. The documentary also tells the tale of Karen Mason, Barry Mason, and Larry Flynt (all real characters) who ran the bookstore and gay pornography shop, Circus of Books.

In this documentary, we see how the LGBTQ community struggled a crucial times that has paved the way for new community members. It also shows how Rachel Mason’s parents were unintentional activists at that time. It is certainly the film to watch for more knowledge about the past struggles of the LGBTQ community in the 80s.

6. Alex Strange Love

A rom-com that follows the life of a teenager, Alex, as he explores his sexuality. Some of the main cast in the film are Daniel Doheny and Antonio Marzaile. Alex who is a virgin and has a girlfriend is left questioning whether he could be bisexual as another openly gay teen admits he has a crush on him.

The movie was released in 2018 and has been given many accolades for exploring the topic of teen sexuality.

7. The Boys In The Band

A film with a strong message being passed across by an entire cast of openly gay actors. Some cast members include Jim Parsons and MattBomer. This 1968-set based drama features a group of gay friends who go for a birthday celebration. The gathering takes a downward hill as a straight male who was the former roommate of the host shows up uninvited.

Simple lessons from the movie include owning one’s truth as being gay and dealing with rejection from society. The movie was released in 2020 while the full cast had played the Broadway show in 2018.

8. The Danish Girl

The story is inspired by the true events surrounding Danish painters Lili Elbe and Gerda Wegener. It is also based on a novel with the same title. The story was set in the mid-1920s and follows the journey of Lili Elbe, one of the first people to undergo gender reassignment.

The film got some criticism for allowing a cisgender cast, Eddie Redmayne, to play the role of a transgender. The movie also features Alicia Vikander as one of the cast. The story was so beautifully told, the movie made it to the Academy Awards. It was released in 2015.

The documentary shows how the representation of transgender people on-screen influences trans people in real life. It aims to inform people of how much still needs to be done in terms of properly representing the LGBTQ community on screen. The documentary gets an almost perfect score on rotten tomatoes.
